Advancing Communities Right to Health and Clean Environment

Human Rights Agenda[HURIA]   with support from   Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir   Foundation and the   Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union   today held a Free Medical Camp in Kikaangoni,in Jomvu Constituency. The Camp is a series of activities organized by HURIA in response to the resident's outcry over alleged increased cases of respiratory diseases due to inhalation of clinker dust stored closer to their   homesteads. HURIA is currently documenting complaints against companies impacting on communities' health and environment. Amplifying Community Voices on Objection to Granting of Mining Licence to ARM Cement PLC

This morning, Human Rights Agenda[HURIA] met with community members from Maereni, Chauringo, Pangani whose parcels of land are covered under the mining licence applied by ARM Cement plc. The communities had an opportunity to air their grievances against the company through the media who were also present during the meeting. Through mediation, advisory sessions, referrals we resolve publ ic grievances on alleged threatening, violations, abuses and infringement of human rights. We will continue to investigate, document and expose human rights violations and abuses and increase their visibility through special reports and use of alternative and mainstream media. Human Rights Agenda[HURIA] will continue supporting and sustaining community efforts towards a clean and healthy environment.

Monitoring Impact of Infrastructure and Development Projects on Peace, Security and Enjoyment of Human Rights;  For the last two weeks, HURIAs # PublicComplaintsResponseTeam has been conducting one on one Meetings, indulging Key Informants both from the Kenya Airport Authority and National Land Commission to share grievances raised by the Project affected persons, seek clarification, confirm findings and evidence collec ted, as well provide recommendations and suggest ways of preventing potential violation of peoples rights in the implementation of the Airport Expansion, where the government seeks to acquire more than 259 hectares of land. Today evening, HURIAs #PublicComplaintsResponseTeam held a feedback meeting with the Project Affected Persons (PAPs) of Kwa Chocha and Shela Ward. Press Conference on Objection to Granting of Mining Licence to ARM Cement Plc

Today, we held a press briefing together with professionals and leaders from Kaloleni/Kambe area to object the grant of Mining Rights to ARM Cement plc by the Government. Amongst the leaders present in the briefing was Commissioner Morris Dzoro of the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) who also hails from the area. In a strong objection petition, Human Rights Agenda[HURIA] has urged the Cabinet Secretary in charge of Mining and Petroleum to only reject the application but also revoke the existing mineral rights held by the company for their breach of standards and non-compliance to the mining regulations.

Kwale County Amani Clubs Youth Forum

HURIA had the pleasure of attending the Kwale County Amani Clubs Youth Forum as a key stakeholder engaged in sensitizing and equipping students and teachers with skills in identifying and responding to early signs of radicalization and violent extremism. The one day event created a platform for students from various schools to give their insights on their roles in peace building and preventing violent extremism.
